Followed by the alleged massive harassment and detention of Bengali speaking migrant labourers elsewhere, West Bengal CM announced Shramashree scheme. The Project aims to quickly move individuals back to their home state by providing financial and community support to the individual upon return.
Salient Features of the Scheme
- Financial Assistance: The registered beneficiary will receive ₹5,000 per month for a maximum of 1 year.
- Comprehensive Welfare Access: Other state strengthens, the scheme can offer ration benefits and free health care strength under the Swastha Sathi scheme.
- Family Foresight:The families of migrant workers will also be able to qualify for a number of other government welfare programs.
Background and Motivation
The program was established after thousands of workers in other states suffered demands that they prove their citizenship, and some were even deported wrongly. In recent months alone, it is estimated that some 10,000 workers have flocked back to West Bengal. Local support needed Although life abroad is tough for many, with no career options within the country many are forced to return to work.
Eligibility and Registration
The scheme is expected to benefit 22.4 lakh migrant workers in the state. Work back from the crumbling North African state has been a lifeline for the Indian government, as both deported and returning labourers can benefit only if they log their details on a special Shramashree site. When they sign up they will be issued with a card which can be used to access the scheme's financial help and associated welfare support.
The Shramashree scheme will help in the rehabilitation process of migrant workers by ensuring that there is a financial safety net for them, as well as ensuring that they get access to social security which would help them till they get stabilised for his employment.
