Mumbai CNG Outage After Pipeline Damage Brings Taxis and Autos to a Standstill
A major disruption in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) supply hit the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Sunday after a gas pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) compound was damaged. The incident halted supply to the Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala , triggering widespread shutdown of CNG pumps across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai .
Pipeline Damage Paralyzes Urban Transport
MGL confirmed that the damaged mainline cut off gas flow to the Wadala station—an essential node for feeding CNG outlets across the region. As pumps ran dry, hundreds of taxis, auto rickshaws and ride-sharing cabs were forced off the roads, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.
Despite the shutdown, MGL assured that domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supply was prioritised and kept uninterrupted to residential consumers.
Queues, Uncertainty and Surge Pricing
Long queues formed at the few stations where minor supply returned intermittently. Drivers lined up for hours without clarity on restoration timelines. Many preferred staying in queues overnight to avoid larger crowds once pumping resumed.
The shortage pushed surge pricing sharply upward on platforms like Uber and Ola. A Mira Road–BKC trip that normally costs ?400–?450 shot up to ?550–?600 , reflecting severe market imbalance.
Repair Work and Gradual Restoration
MGL stated that full normalisation would happen only after repairs and resumption of supply to CGS Wadala. By late evening, the corporation began gradually restoring gas flow , offering partial relief to transport operators.
