Delhi CM Inaugurates 47th National Junior Boys Handball Championship in Capital

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the 47th National Junior Boys Handball Championship at a government school in Pitampura, New Delhi, marking a significant boost to youth-centric sports development in the capital. The national tournament has drawn participation from young handball players representing multiple states, highlighting the expanding footprint of school and junior-level sports in India.

Organisation and Opening Ceremony

The championship is being jointly conducted by the Handball Federation of India and the Delhi Handball Association . The inaugural function was attended by HFI President Mahesh Kumar, sports administrators, coaches, and local officials.

Interacting with players during the ceremony, the Chief Minister emphasised the role of discipline, perseverance, and teamwork in shaping successful athletes. She noted that competitive exposure at a young age is essential for building confidence and sporting excellence.


Financial Support and Incentives for Players

Addressing the gathering, Rekha Gupta announced a cash reward of ₹1 lakh for the tournament’s winning team. She also drew attention to recent enhancements in Delhi’s sports policy, under which allowances for state-level athletes have been increased.

According to officials, the revised provisions aim to ease financial pressures on young sportspersons, enabling them to focus on training, nutrition, and participation in national competitions without economic barriers.


Sports Policy Reforms and Olympic Aspirations

The Chief Minister highlighted Delhi’s updated incentive framework for international sporting achievements. Under the revised structure, medal winners at international events are eligible for ₹7 crore for gold, ₹5 crore for silver, and ₹3 crore for bronze.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s vision of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, she said sustained investment in grassroots and junior sports would be critical to building a strong pipeline of future Olympians.


Encouragement to Young Athletes

Motivating the participants, Gupta quoted cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar , encouraging players to enjoy the sport while pursuing excellence with commitment. Sports officials noted that national junior championships serve as key platforms for talent identification and long-term athlete development.
