India Maintains Neutral Stance in UN Vote on Russia-Ukraine War
India abstained from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a draft resolution calling for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The vote coincided with the fourth anniversary of the conflict and highlighted persistent divergences within the international community.
Outcome of the General Assembly Vote
The resolution, titled “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine,” was adopted by the 193-member Assembly with 107 votes in favour, 12 against and 51 abstentions. The text reiterated the need for a comprehensive, just and durable peace consistent with international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
It emphasised Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, including territorial waters.
Major Provisions of the Resolution
The Assembly urged an immediate cessation of hostilities and called for confidence-building humanitarian measures. These included a full exchange of prisoners of war, release of unlawfully detained individuals and the return of civilians and children reportedly subjected to forced transfers or deportations.
The resolution also expressed grave concern over continuing attacks on civilians, energy infrastructure and critical facilities, warning of worsening humanitarian consequences.
India’s Strategic and Diplomatic Position
India’s abstention reflects its long-standing position advocating dialogue and diplomacy. Since the onset of the conflict, New Delhi has avoided direct alignment while consistently calling for respect for sovereignty and peaceful resolution of disputes.
By abstaining, India sustained its policy of strategic autonomy, balancing its traditional partnership with Russia alongside expanding engagement with Western economies.
Broader Geopolitical Implications
Several countries — including China, Brazil, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE and the United States — also abstained, underscoring complex geopolitical calculations shaping responses to the war.
