Vietnamese Film Skin of Youth Wins Golden Peacock at IFFI -2025

The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) concluded with global acclaim for powerful narratives and cinematic innovation. The highest recognition, the Golden Peacock Award for Best Film , was awarded to the Vietnamese drama Skin of Youth , making it the most celebrated title of this year’s closing ceremony. The award marked a milestone in international storytelling centred on personal identity, social struggle and emotional resilience.

Story of Identity, Conflict and Human Intimacy

Set in 1990s Saigon, the film follows the layered relationship between San, a transgender sex worker saving money for gender-affirming surgery, and Nam, a cage fighter navigating fatherhood and survival in an unforgiving world. Through intimate writing and evocative cinematography, the narrative examines dignity, acceptance and love under societal pressure. Its nuanced portrayal of LGBTQ+ lives resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

Jury Recognition and Directorial Vision

The international jury commended the film for its visual strength, mature sensitivity and bold thematic treatment. Director Ashleigh Mayfair revealed that much of the narrative was inspired by her transgender sibling’s lived experience, lending authenticity and emotional depth to the screenplay. The award solidifies the film as one of the year’s most significant voices in Asian cinema.

Other Key Awards at the Festival

The closing ceremony also highlighted diverse global creators. Norwegian film Safe House received the ICFT–UNESCO Gandhi Medal for promoting peace and humanitarian values. The Best Debut Director Award was jointly presented to Hesam Farahmand ( My Daughter’s Hair ) and Tonis Pill ( Frank ), while Silver Peacock honours recognised standout acting performances from Ubeimar Rios and Jara Sofija Ostan.
