Indian Army to Procure First Indigenously Manufactured Software Defined Radios

  • The Indian Army has signed a contract to procure its first batch of indigenously designed and manufactured Software Defined Radios (SDRs) , marking a major step in strengthening secure communication and advancing defence self-reliance. The SDRs have been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) .

Advanced Tactical Communication

  • These state-of-the-art SDRs feature high data rates and Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) capabilities, ensuring real-time, secure, and resilient communication across varied terrains. The new systems will enhance the Army’s network-centric warfare capabilities by improving coordination and information sharing across units.

Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) Framework

  • The procurement follows the launch of Indian Radio Software Architecture (IRSA) Version 1.0 , developed by DRDO , Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) , and the Tri-Services . IRSA defines software interfaces, APIs, and waveform standards for SDRs, ensuring interoperability and certification across all defence platforms. The standard was unveiled during a national workshop at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi .

Collaboration and Development

  • The IRSA initiative , launched in 2021 , involved cooperation between DRDO, defence PSUs, industry partners, and academic institutions. The 2025 approval of Version 1.0 establishes India’s first unified SDR software standard , positioning the country as a global hub for interoperable and export-ready SDR technologies .

Exam-Oriented Facts

  • Indian Army signed its first SDR procurement contract in October 2025 .

  • SDRs developed by DRDO , manufactured by BEL .

  • IRSA Version 1.0 approved in 2025 .

  • SDRs equipped with MANET for secure battlefield communication.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Capabilities

The induction of indigenous SDRs marks a key milestone in the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative , enhancing joint communication among the Army, Navy, and Air Force . The standardised framework will allow easier upgrades and integration of advanced technologies while enabling export opportunities for IRSA-compliant systems , strengthening India’s position in the global defence communication sector.
