Vasai Cathedral Wins UNESCO Heritage Conservation Honour

Community Restoration of Our Lady of Grace Cathedral Recognised

The Our Lady of Grace Cathedral , a 475-year-old monument in Papdy village, Vasai, has secured international recognition for its community-driven restoration. The conservation project received the Award of Merit at the 2025 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation , announced in Bangkok. The accolade highlights the preservation of a sixteenth-century Portuguese-era structure through traditional building techniques and strong local engagement.

Restoration of a Portuguese-Era Monument

Constructed during Portuguese rule, the cathedral reflects early colonial ecclesiastical architecture in western India. Notably, the structure was originally built without cement or modern bricks, relying instead on stone masonry and mud-based materials.

Over centuries, climatic exposure and earlier non-traditional repairs weakened several components, including the roof and bell tower. The restoration programme, undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 crore, focused on stabilising structural elements and reversing incompatible modifications. Key interventions included repairs to the roof, façade, corridors, colonnades, and intricately carved liturgical interiors.

Community-Led Conservation Model

The project was guided by conservation architect Ainsley Lewis , in collaboration with parish members and church authorities. Funding was mobilised primarily through contributions from the local community, reflecting sustained stakeholder participation.

The UNESCO jury commended the effective application of traditional craftsmanship and the cathedral’s revival as a functioning place of worship. Evaluation criteria included technical conservation quality, sustainability, and contextual sensitivity. The awards assessed 90 entries from 16 countries.

Heritage Significance of Vasai

Vasai , historically known as Bassein, served as a prominent Portuguese settlement in the sixteenth century. The region retains multiple examples of colonial-era architecture and fortifications.
