Google Launches On-Device AI Scam Protection for Indian Pixel Users
Google has unveiled an advanced on-device scam detection system for Pixel users in India, aiming to strengthen smartphone security amid rising digital fraud cases. The new system uses the lightweight Gemini Nano model to analyse calls in real time, offering privacy-preserving protection without sending data to the cloud.
Real-Time AI Call Monitoring for Safer Conversations
The feature continuously scans live calls for suspicious cues such as pressure tactics, false urgency, or impersonation attempts. When the system detects a risky pattern, it alerts the user instantly with on-screen warnings. Since all processing happens on the device, no conversations are recorded or uploaded, ensuring full user confidentiality.
Enhanced Security During Financial Activities
Users often fall victim to scams during payments or screen-sharing. To counter this, Google has introduced alerts that appear whenever apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm are opened during calls from unknown numbers. The alert gives users one-tap control to disconnect and stop sharing, reducing exposure to manipulation attempts.
Building a Safer Digital Ecosystem Through Education
Google is also expanding its digital literacy outreach across India. Beginning January 2026, its Safe Digital Habits programme will offer curated learning tools for students, educators, and parents. The initiative builds on past partnerships that trained thousands in online safety practices.
Strengthening Verification & Content Authenticity
Additionally, Google is piloting SIM-based Enhanced Number Verification to reduce reliance on SMS OTPs—a common vector for fraud. The company is also collaborating with regulators to maintain an updated list of verified lending apps, while broadening access to its SynthID watermarking tool for identifying AI-generated media.
