Kochi to Host International Seaweed Expo and Summit in January 2026

Kochi will welcome global leaders of the marine algae sector as it hosts the 7th India International Seaweed Expo and Summit on 29–30 January 2026 . The event is set to be one of the largest international gatherings dedicated to seaweed innovation, sustainability and blue economy development, highlighting India’s expanding role in the marine biotechnology landscape.

The summit is expected to attract delegates from Brazil, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Sweden and several other countries. Representatives from research institutes, policymakers, private companies, startups and international organisations will participate, making the expo a vibrant platform for collaboration and technology exchange. The event aims to foster global partnerships that can advance industrial applications and coastal livelihood opportunities.

Organisers and Institutional Collaboration

The expo is being jointly organised by the ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) , the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the CSIR–Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) . This collaboration brings together expertise in aquaculture, marine science, industrial chemistry and biotechnology, underscoring the summit’s importance for both research and commercial sectors.

Themes, Innovations and Industry Opportunities

Key sessions will showcase advancements in seaweed cultivation, large-scale processing, value-added product development and sustainable coastal entrepreneurship . Discussions will explore emerging opportunities in nutraceuticals, bioplastics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biofuels and climate-smart coastal development . With rising global demand for seaweed-based products, the summit will support India’s efforts to scale up seaweed farming—especially along the southern and western coastlines.
