CAG to Establish Centre of Excellence for Financial Audit in Hyderabad

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Financial Audit in Hyderabad, marking a major step toward modernising the country’s public auditing ecosystem. The initiative aims to integrate advanced technology and global audit standards into India’s financial oversight framework, supporting more efficient and transparent governance.

A National Hub for Audit Innovation

The upcoming centre will function as a national-level institution for research, innovation and capacity-building in financial auditing. It is expected to serve as a knowledge platform for strengthening audit methodologies across state and central audit offices. By promoting consistent practices and skill enhancement, the centre will help build a more robust system of financial accountability.

AI, Data Analytics and Digital Tools at the Core

At the recent Accountants General Conference, senior CAG officials highlighted the importance of transitioning from sample-based audits to full data-led audits . With audit offices holding extensive financial datasets, the integration of artificial intelligence, automation and advanced analytics will play a central role. The CAG is also exploring the development of its own large language model (LLM) to improve audit analysis, documentation and risk assessment.

Strengthening Audit Processes and Institutional Systems

The Centre of Excellence will support harmonisation of audit procedures and enhanced coordination between audit and accounts departments. The adoption of modern techniques such as voucher-level checks, digital sanction tracking, and ESG-compliant auditing frameworks is expected to significantly improve accuracy, reduce inefficiencies and plug systemic loopholes.
