Uttarakhand Crosses 1 GW Solar Capacity Milestone

Diversified Solar Projects Propel Uttarakhand’s Clean Energy Growth

Uttarakhand has achieved a major renewable energy milestone by surpassing 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed solar power capacity. The state’s cumulative solar installation now exceeds 1,027.87 megawatts (MW), marking a notable advance in its clean energy transition and reinforcing its emphasis on sustainable development and energy resilience.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the development as a reflection of India’s broader renewable energy momentum. He noted that national initiatives promoting green growth and domestic self-reliance have encouraged states to expand solar adoption while generating employment opportunities at the local level.

Diversified Solar Installations

The capacity expansion has been driven by a mix of project types, including grid-connected rooftop systems, ground-mounted plants, canal-top installations and solar-powered pumps. Ground-mounted solar projects account for approximately 397 MW, while rooftop installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme contribute around 241 MW.

Additional contributions include 137 MW under the Chief Minister Solar Self-Employment Scheme, 110 MW through commercial net metering, 51 MW from captive solar plants, 37 MW via canal-top and canal-bank projects, and 26 MW across government buildings. This diversified portfolio highlights balanced participation from residential, commercial and institutional sectors.

Employment and Energy Security

Officials emphasised that integration of central and state-level schemes has expanded self-employment avenues, particularly for youth and small entrepreneurs. More than 100 MW of additional solar capacity is currently under installation, reflecting sustained growth momentum.

Solar expansion has also strengthened energy access in remote mountainous regions while contributing to reductions in carbon emissions and dependence on conventional fuels.

Institutional and Policy Support

The Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (UREDA) has played a pivotal role by facilitating project implementation, providing technical guidance and promoting public awareness. Policy incentives, simplified approvals and subsidy mechanisms have accelerated private sector participation.

Important Facts for Exams

  • 1 GW equals 1,000 MW

  • Rooftop solar enables decentralised generation

  • Canal-top solar conserves land and reduces evaporation

  • India targets 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030

Future Outlook

The state government has outlined plans to further scale solar installations, deepen outreach in remote areas and attract greater investment. The milestone positions Uttarakhand as a steadily emerging contributor to India’s renewable energy landscape.
