India and France Launch Year of Innovation During Macron Visit

Modi–Macron Talks Reinforce AI, Defence and Indo-Pacific Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet French President Emmanuel Macron to formally launch the ‘India–France Year of Innovation’, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation. Macron’s three-day visit from February 17 to 19 reflects the growing depth of the strategic partnership, with discussions expected to span artificial intelligence, defence modernisation, technology collaboration, and Indo-Pacific security.

Innovation and AI at the Core

A central feature of the visit is joint engagement on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The leaders are expected to emphasise responsible and human-centric AI development, building upon earlier high-level dialogues on global AI governance. The ‘Year of Innovation’ framework seeks to strengthen linkages among start-ups, research institutions, and technology enterprises in both countries.

The initiative is designed to accelerate cooperation in digital infrastructure, advanced computing, and AI-driven applications, while also supporting capacity-building for developing economies.

Deepening Defence Collaboration

Defence remains a pillar of India–France relations. The visit follows recent progress in advanced military cooperation, particularly involving Rafale fighter aircraft. India’s expanding Rafale fleet underscores long-term defence industrial engagement, technology transfer, and operational interoperability between the two nations.

Such collaborations contribute not only to capability enhancement but also to strengthening indigenous manufacturing ecosystems.

Shared Indo-Pacific Vision

Strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific continues to gain prominence. France’s presence as a resident power and India’s regional role provide natural convergence on maritime security, stability, and rules-based order. Both countries advocate strategic autonomy, multilateralism, and reforms of global governance institutions, including the United Nations.
