India’s First Centralised Weapon Database
In a major step towards strengthening internal security and counter-terror preparedness , the Union government has launched India’s first-ever national weapons database . The initiative aims to curb terrorism, organised crime and extremism by improving the tracking, tracing and recovery of government-owned firearms that slip into illegal circulation.
Launch at Anti-Terror Conference 2025
The database, titled ‘Lost, Looted and Recovered Firearm’ , was formally launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Anti-Terror Conference 2025 . The annual two-day conference is organised by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) , which has developed and will host the platform under the Ministry of Home Affairs . The launch reflects the government’s push to modernise India’s counter-terror infrastructure through technology-driven solutions.
Scope and Coverage of the Database
The platform maintains detailed digital records of government-owned firearms that have been lost, looted, stolen or later recovered . These include weapons belonging to State Police forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) . A secure and purpose-built digital interface allows authorised agencies to upload updates in real time, ensuring accuracy and accountability.
Nationwide Integration and Access
Inputs from all States and Union Territories have been integrated, including sensitive regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East and Left-Wing Extremism–affected areas . The centralised repository enables law enforcement agencies to trace a weapon’s origin, movement and recovery history , significantly enhancing investigative speed and coordination across jurisdictions.
Impact on Counter-Terror and Crime Control
Security experts note that stolen government firearms often reach terrorist groups, Naxalites and organised criminal networks . By centralising firearm data, authorities aim to disrupt such supply chains, prevent reuse of weapons in violent incidents, and strengthen intelligence-led policing . The initiative is part of a broader MHA strategy to improve inter-agency cooperation and leverage technology for national security.
