India to host 2030 Commonwealth Games at Ahmedabad

India has got a go-ahead from the government for bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games with the proposed host city being Ahmedabad. The decision follows the Indian Olympic Association's approval and follows Canada's withdrawal from the process. The Commonwealth Sport General Assembly will determine the final host city in November 2025.

Government Approval

India's bid has been approved by the Union Cabinet under PM Narendra Modi. The government will guarantee the bid, provide financial and other support to Gujarat in the event of a successful bid. The formal Expression of Interest was issued in March to a deadline of August 31 for proposals to be received.

Ahmedabad as the Host

Ahmedabad is equipped with state-of-the-art sports infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium, which hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup Final. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will be upgraded with an aquatics centre, football stadium and indoor arenas.

Sports Programme

India's sport roster is more comprehensive in comparison to the pruned 2026 Glasgow Games. Despite this, indigenous Indian sports like kabaddi and kho kho will be brought back and so will athletics like shooting, wrestling and archery.

Impact and Opportunities

It is hoped that the Games will provide a boost to tourism, local business, employment and youth sport. They will, moreover, provide opportunities in sports science, logistics, media and event management, and will instill national pride and unity.

Future Ambitions

India's 2030 bid echoes its broader ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad being a front-runner. The final budget will be agreed following consultation with Commonwealth Sport.
