Samudra Pratap: A Milestone in Marine Pollution Control
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has inducted its first dedicated Pollution Control Vessel (PCV), Samudra Pratap , marking a significant advancement in India’s maritime environmental protection framework. The vessel was formally delivered during an induction ceremony at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) , highlighting India’s growing emphasis on indigenisation, marine safety and environmental governance .
Indigenous Design and Strategic Importance
Samudra Pratap is the first indigenously designed and built pollution control vessel to join the Coast Guard fleet. Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited , the vessel features over 60 per cent indigenous content , aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Its induction substantially enhances India’s capability to respond swiftly to oil spills, chemical leaks and other marine pollution incidents within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) .
Advanced Combat and Mission Systems
Beyond pollution control, the vessel is equipped for maritime security operations. It carries a 30 mm CRN-91 naval gun and two 12.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled guns , integrated with advanced fire control systems. The ship also incorporates indigenously developed mission equipment , improving operational reliability, survivability and self-reliance while enabling effective law enforcement at sea.
Pollution Response and Manoeuvring Capabilities
Samudra Pratap is the first ICG pollution control vessel to be fitted with a retractable stern thruster , Dynamic Positioning System and flush-type side sweeping arms . It is equipped with specialised pollution response gear, a dedicated pollution response boat with davit , high-capacity external firefighting systems , a sea boat davit and a shaft generator. These features allow precise manoeuvring and effective containment, recovery and mitigation of marine pollutants during emergencies.
Strengthening Maritime Governance
The induction of Samudra Pratap reinforces India’s ability to enforce marine pollution control regulations, support search and rescue (SAR) missions and respond to maritime disasters. The vessel will serve as a vital platform for environmental protection, disaster response and maritime governance, strengthening the Indian Coast Guard’s mandate of ensuring safe, secure and clean seas .
