DRDO Conducts Successful Trial of High-Speed Rocket-Sled Escape System

India has taken a significant step forward in strengthening indigenous aviation safety technology with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully testing a high-speed rocket-sled escape system for fighter aircraft. The demonstration marks a crucial advancement in ensuring pilot survival during emergency ejections at extreme speeds.

High-Speed Trial at Chandigarh Facility

The trial was carried out at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility at DRDO’s Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh. The escape system was tested at 800 km/h , simulating high-stress conditions faced by pilots during in-flight emergencies. A dummy aircrew module was propelled along the track, showcasing flawless separation and safe extraction from the mock aircraft frame.

Validation of Core Escape Technologies

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the test successfully validated three critical components of the ejection system:
Canopy severance , ensuring obstruction-free exit
Sequenced ejection timing , preventing collision with aircraft structures
Aircrew recovery mechanisms , confirming safe distancing and stabilisation

These capabilities are essential for modern fighter jets, enabling pilots to eject safely even at high speeds and low reaction windows.

National Recognition and Strategic Importance

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh applauded DRDO, HAL, ADA, the Indian Air Force and private industry partners for the landmark success, noting that it strengthens India’s pursuit of technological self-reliance. The achievement demonstrates the growing maturity of indigenous aviation safety systems, reducing dependence on foreign ejection technologies.
