The Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve (CDBR)

Recent Recognition:
Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve (CDBR) in Himachal Pradesh has recently been listed as a part of UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR). The inclusion makes the total number of biosphere reserves listed by UNESCO in India 13.

Location and Geography:

  • The CDBR is located in the trans-Himalayan area covering approximately 7,770 sq.km.
  • It is found mostly in Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Vast windswept plateaus, glacial valleys and alpine lakes, as well as rugged and high-altitude desert terrain characterize the landscape.

Ecological Significance:

  • It is the first high altitude cold desert biosphere reserve in India designated a biosphere reserve in 2009.
  • It is one of the harshest and driest habitats in the whole UNESCO WNBR.
  • Among the preserved places in the reserve, there are Pin Valley national park, Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary and picturesque Chandratal and Sarchu valleys.

Biodiversity:

Flora: It is a delicate natural ecosystem which supports 732 species of vascular plants. This consists of 30 endemic species and 157 near endemic species which are unique to the Indian Himalayas. The flora is acclimated to the harsh climate and includes hardy alpine grasses, medicinal herbs, and rare stands of trees such as Willow-leaved sea-buckthorn, Himalayan birch and Persian juniper.

Fauna: Within the CDBR, there are important wildlife such as the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Ibex, Blue Sheep and Himalayan Wolf. It is also full of avian life as well, with species such as Himalayan Snowcock and Golden Eagle.
