UP Expands Forensic Network with Advanced Regional Laboratory

Uttar Pradesh has taken a major step toward strengthening its criminal investigation framework with the inauguration of the upgraded Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) in Gorakhpur. The new facility is part of the state’s broader plan to modernise forensic infrastructure across all administrative mandals, ensuring that scientific evidence becomes central to law enforcement and judicial processes.

The Gorakhpur RFSL is equipped with high-end DNA profiling systems, AI-assisted forensic tools, drone-based documentation units and robotics modules for complex evidence analysis. These upgrades are expected to reduce pendency, accelerate case handling and support more precise crime reconstruction.

Boost to Evidence Collection and Justice Delivery Across Districts

To complement the expanded lab, Uttar Pradesh has deployed two mobile forensic vans to each of its 75 districts , enabling rapid and professional sample collection directly from the crime scene. The mobile labs ensure that evidence remains uncontaminated and reaches examination units within hours, significantly reducing the lag between investigation and forensic reporting.

The enhanced capabilities are especially crucial for sensitive cases—including homicide, sexual offences, organised crime and anti-terrorism operations—where timely scientific inputs can make or break the outcome of investigations. Authorities expect that improved forensic access will help raise conviction rates and reinforce public trust in law enforcement.

The state also prioritises skill development through the State Forensic Institute in Lucknow , which offers certificate, diploma and degree programs to build a trained workforce capable of operating advanced forensic systems.
