Silchar-Sairang Passenger Train to Strengthen Mizoram Connectivity

Northeast Rail Expansion Gains Momentum with New Assam–Mizoram Service

The Silchar–Sairang passenger train service is set to begin operations on February 20, marking a key advancement in rail connectivity for Mizoram. Announced by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the new train will run five days a week, enhancing accessibility between Assam and Mizoram.

Train number 55669/55670 will operate between Silchar in Assam and Sairang, located near Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital. The service is expected to significantly ease passenger movement while supporting trade and regional integration.

Operational Schedule and Train Composition

As per NFR’s notification, the Silchar–Sairang train will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The return journey from Sairang to Silchar will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The train will be hauled by a diesel locomotive and comprise seven coaches, including second-class compartments and luggage-cum-brake vans. Passenger operations will commence from Silchar on February 20 and from Sairang on February 21.

Boost to Mizoram’s Rail Access

Rail connectivity up to Sairang was inaugurated in September last year, representing a historic milestone for Mizoram’s transport infrastructure. The launch of regular passenger services now transforms the rail link into a functional mobility corridor.

Improved rail access is expected to reduce travel time, facilitate logistics, and strengthen economic activity. It also enhances connectivity with major urban centres such as Guwahati and Kolkata.

Strategic Significance of Northeast Rail Expansion

Expanding rail infrastructure in the Northeast remains a national priority due to the region’s terrain challenges and geopolitical importance. Enhanced connectivity supports economic inclusion, social mobility and administrative efficiency.
