150 Years of Vande Mataram

Context:
The Government of Maharashtra has launched the “Sardh Shatabdi Mahotsav” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of India’s national song, ‘Vande Mataram’ . The celebrations began on 7 November 2025 at the Mantralaya’s Trimurti courtyard in Mumbai , inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . The initiative honours the song’s deep historical and emotional significance in India’s freedom movement.

Historical Background

  • ‘Vande Mataram’ was written in 1875 by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay , originally in Sanskrit and Bengali , later included in his novel Anandamath (1882) .

  • The song became the spiritual and patriotic anthem of India’s independence struggle, inspiring generations of freedom fighters.

  • The phrase “Vande Mataram” translates to “Mother, I bow to thee” , symbolising devotion to the motherland.
