Goa Hosts World Ocean Science Congress 2026

Global Ocean Experts Convene at NIO Panaji

Goa is hosting the fourth edition of the World Ocean Science Congress 2026 at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Panaji. The multi-day event, running until February 26, has drawn participation from scientists, policymakers, maritime industries, and coastal stakeholders, focusing on ocean health, climate resilience, and sustainable blue economy strategies.

Ocean’s Role in Economy and Ecology

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasised the ocean’s centrality to Goa’s economy and cultural identity. With a 193 km coastline, Goa’s livelihoods are closely linked to fisheries, tourism, and maritime activities.

He highlighted the broader national context, noting that a significant share of India’s population resides in coastal regions, making marine sustainability and climate resilience critical policy priorities.

Scientific Collaboration and Research Advances

The congress is jointly organised by NIO, the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), and Goa University . Earlier editions were hosted in Visakhapatnam, Kochi, and Chennai.

Key discussions centre on ocean observation systems, climate modelling, artificial intelligence applications, and autonomous underwater technologies. NIO’s contributions in marine biotechnology and seabed research were highlighted as important components of India’s ocean science capabilities.

Climate Change and Blue Economy Focus

Sessions address marine ecosystem preservation, coastal hazard mitigation, and sustainable utilisation of ocean resources. The agenda integrates community engagement initiatives, including interactions with fishermen and educational outreach involving students.

Sawant stressed that oceans face growing pressures from pollution, climate variability, and unsustainable exploitation. He underscored that blue economy development must align with ecological safeguards and scientific evidence.

Exam-Focused Key Points

  • India’s coastline exceeds 7,500 km.

  • National Institute of Oceanography headquartered in Goa.

  • Blue economy promotes sustainable marine resource use.

  • CRZ framework regulates coastal activities.
