Maharashtra Creates World Record with Rapid Solar Pump Deployment

Maharashtra has marked a major breakthrough in its renewable energy journey by installing 45,911 off-grid solar agricultural pumps within just 30 days , earning official recognition from Guinness World Records . The achievement demonstrates the state’s accelerated push towards clean irrigation solutions and reduced reliance on traditional power infrastructure.

Unprecedented Scale Under PM-KUSUM and State Schemes

The large-scale rollout was implemented under PM-KUSUM Component B and the Magel Tyala Saur Krushi Pump Yojana , two major programmes that aim to solarise India’s agricultural sector. With this rapid deployment, Maharashtra has emerged as the fastest solar pump-adopting state in India and ranks second globally after China in terms of speed and scale achieved by a single administrative region.

Government Backing and Expansion Targets

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded the initiative, noting that solar pumps not only strengthen irrigation access but also ease the load on the electricity grid. Maharashtra has already installed 7.47 lakh solar pumps and aims to expand this number to 10.45 lakh , signalling a long-term commitment to agricultural sustainability.

Streamlined Execution and Farmer-Centric Approach

MSEDCL Chairman Lokesh Chandra attributed the record to strong scheme architecture, transparent vendor participation and continuous monitoring. Farmers’ grievances must be resolved within three days, ensuring accountability. Pump capacity, ranging from 3 HP to 7 HP , is allocated based on land size. Private vendor GK Energy alone contributed nearly 17% of total installations during the record period.
