Hyderabad Unveils Model Eco-Footpath with Recycled Plastic Pavers and Solar Roofing
In a move toward greener urban mobility, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated the development of a model environment-friendly footpath at Jubilee Hills , incorporating recycled plastic paver blocks and a rooftop solar energy system. The project, located on the corridor between Ramanaidu Studio (Road No. 79/82 junction) and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Junction (Road No. 82) , was launched on November 24 and is expected to be completed within four months .
Sustainable Materials & Waste Reduction
The footpath replaces conventional cement tiles with paver blocks made from 65–70% post-consumer single-use plastic , including multilayer packaging, LDPE and LLDPE waste. The remaining composition consists of mineral fillers and strengthening additives, giving the blocks a compressive strength of ≥35 MPa , ideal for pedestrian-use zones. This innovation is expected to divert considerable volumes of plastic from landfills while reducing dependence on virgin construction materials.
The project spans 1 km on the left side of the corridor and 500 metres on the right , with a sanctioned cost of ₹1.68 crore .
Solar Canopy for Power Generation & Shade
A major feature of the initiative is the installation of a 10 kWp solar grid system over sections of the footpath. The canopy will be fitted with 600+ Wp solar modules , a grid-tied inverter, automated cleaning units, lightning protection, earthing and AC/DC distribution panels. Along with offering shade for pedestrians, the panels will feed renewable energy into the power grid.
To ensure inclusivity, the pathway will include tactile pavers and guidance strips , enhancing mobility support for persons with visual disabilities.
