World Animal Day

  • Date: observed on the 4th of October each year.
  • Purpose: To increase world consciousness of raising animal welfare standards and ensuring they are not abused.

2. Theme for 2025

  • It is the theme of Save Animals, Save the Planet!, where the visuals illustrate the interrelation between animal conservation and environmental health.

3. Historical Background

  • Originator: Heinrich Zimmermann, a German author and animal rights activist, was the first to come up with the idea of the day.
  • First Event: The initial celebration took place in Berlin on March 24, 1925, where more than 5,000 people attended it.
  • Date Change: In 1929, the event was set to take place on its present date, October 4, to coincide with the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, an animal and ecology patron saint.
  • International Adoption: In May 1931, the day was made internationally known when the International Animal Protection Congress which was held in Florence, Italy, passed a unanimous resolution declaring October 4 as World Animal Day.
