India's Shield Against Aerial Threats
India has revealed the Sudarshan Chakra mission, an Indian multi-layered air defence solution to protect strategic, civilian and national assets against aerial attacks by enemies. The project is a significant measure to gain independence in defence technology and at the same time, maintain sound national security.
Mission Overview
Sudarshan Chakra, often likened to Iron Dome in Israel, is developed to intercept, monitor, and disable enemy drones, missiles and aircraft. It integrates soft-kill options such as electronic and cyber warfare with hard-kill options such as missiles and directed-energy weapons to form a shield and a sword against aerial threats.
Technological Components
The system combines various defence technologies such as:
- Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM)
- Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS)
- 5-kilowatt laser weapons
The following components have already gone through the successful flight tests in the DRDO Integrated Air Defence Weapon System programme. The deployment of both kinetic and direct-energy weapons is a breakthrough in defence capabilities of India.
Multi-Domain Integration
The Sudarshan Chakra has a major distinguishing characteristic of the multi-domain fusion of ground, air, sea, undersea, and space-based sensors. This cohesive ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) network will provide the possibility of real-time threat analysis and quick reaction.
Advanced Computing and AI
The mission will utilize artificial intelligence, quantum, and big data analytics to break down huge volumes of information. Threats will also be detected, classified, and neutralised more accurately in real time by AI-powered decision systems.
Strategic Implications
The project reflects the dream of a Shashastra, Suraksit and Aatmanirbhar Bharat- armed, secure and self-reliant India. It indicates the transition to technological sovereignty that prepares India to multi-domain warfare in the future and looks into the ancient wisdom that the best way to live peacefully is to be ready to wage war.
Lessons from Modern Conflicts
Using the national security missions in recent history and citing the operation Sindoor, the mission identifies that deterrence and preparedness play a significant role in national security. It is based on the philosophy, If you want peace, prepare war, and Sudarshan Chakra is an amalgamation of the Indian and the military art of strategy with contemporary military science.
