Government Promotes Mechanised Sanitation and Worker Welfare under NAMASTE
A public outreach programme promoting the National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme will be conducted on 26 February 2026 at Gandhi Prekshagrih, Gandhi Stadium, Nakhasa, Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh. The initiative is aimed at strengthening awareness and expanding social security coverage for sanitation workers, particularly Sewer and Septic Tank Workers (SSWs) and waste pickers.
The event highlights the Government of India’s commitment to ensuring dignity, occupational safety and economic upliftment for sanitation personnel.
Emphasis on Occupational Safety and Health
As part of the programme, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits will be distributed to sanitation workers to minimise exposure to hazardous environments. The distribution reinforces the shift towards safer and mechanised sanitation practices.
Eligible beneficiaries will also receive Ayushman Cards under the Ayushman Bharat health protection framework, providing financial coverage for medical treatment and reducing vulnerability to health-related financial distress.
Skill Development and Alternative Livelihoods
Workers who have completed skill development training under the NAMASTE framework will be provided with sewing machines to encourage income diversification. This measure aims to reduce economic dependence on hazardous manual sanitation activities and promote self-employment opportunities.
The broader objective of the scheme is to transition from manual practices to mechanised systems while empowering workers with enhanced skills and financial inclusion.
Institutional Support and Governance
NAMASTE integrates welfare benefits, financial assistance and capacity building. It supports mechanisation of sanitation services, elimination of unsafe cleaning practices and improved working conditions through structured policy intervention.
