Odisha CM Inaugurates 36th Konark and 15th International Sand Art Festivals

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the 36th Konark Festival and the 15th International Sand Art Festival , marking the start of five days of vibrant cultural festivities. These twin events celebrate the state’s artistic heritage, bringing together renowned performers, sculptors and tourists from across India and abroad.

Opening of the Twin Cultural Events

Organised by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi and OTDC, the festivals aim to promote Odisha’s rich traditions through classical dance and innovative sand artistry. The Konark Festival, staged near the historic Sun Temple, has become one of India’s most prestigious platforms for classical dance forms. Meanwhile, the International Sand Art Festival at Chandrabhaga Beach welcomes global sand sculptors to craft intricate works inspired by mythology, culture and contemporary themes.

Highlights from the Inaugural Evening

The inaugural ceremony opened with an Odissi performance by Sonali Mohapatra and artists from Nrutya Upasana Pitha . The programme featured diverse pieces—ranging from devotional interpretations like the Hanuman Chalisa to classical compositions such as Saranga Pallavi . The event concluded with Chari Yuga Devi , a powerful dance presentation symbolising the divine energy of Maa Durga.

Cultural Importance and Tourism Promotion

The festivals play a crucial role in showcasing Odisha as a key destination for cultural tourism. While the Konark Festival attracts dance enthusiasts nationwide, the Sand Art Festival provides an international platform for creative expression, enhancing Odisha’s global cultural footprint.
