National Highway Fee Rules are Amended by the government to encourage digital payment

• Amendment: National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
• Effective From: 15 November 2025
• Goal: Procedure: Promotions of electronic payments and decrease in cash transactions within the toll plazas.

Key Highlights:

• Cars that do not have valid FASTag receive differentiated tolls:
• Cash: Two times the standard commission.
• UPI Payment: 1.25× the standard fee
• Example: 100 standard charge = 200 (cash) or 125 (UPI).
• Enhances transparency, convenience and expediency of traveling to work and paying the toll.
• Less traffic jam at National Highway plazas and promotes digitalization.

Significance:

• Enhances the management of the toll fees with technology.
• Confers with the interest of the Government in digital payments and effective management of infrastructure.
