President’s Submarine Sortie from Karwar Harbour
President Droupadi Murmu is set to undertake a rare and symbolic submarine sea sortie from Karwar Harbour in Karnataka on December 28 , marking a significant moment in India’s civil–military engagement. The event forms part of her four-day official tour of Goa, Karnataka and Jharkhand , and underlines the President’s active interaction with India’s strategic and defence institutions.
Karwar Harbour, located on India’s western coast, hosts one of the Indian Navy’s most strategic bases . With this sortie, President Murmu will become only the second President of India to travel aboard a submarine, reflecting the Indian Navy’s operational confidence and professionalism.
Legacy of Presidential Military Engagement
The only previous President to undertake a submarine sortie was A P J Abdul Kalam , who sailed from Visakhapatnam in February 2006 . These engagements highlight her hands-on approach towards understanding the operational capabilities of the armed forces.
