SUJVIKA Platform Strengthens India’s Bioeconomy Strategy
Commemorating the 40th Foundation Day of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) , Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh unveiled “SUJVIKA” , an AI-enabled Biotech Product Data Portal developed in partnership with the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE) . The platform was launched at the Civil Services Officers Institute, New Delhi , during celebrations marking DBT’s establishment in 1986.
SUJVIKA functions as a Trade Statistics Digital Intelligence Platform , presenting authenticated biotechnology import data through a structured analytical interface. It delivers sector-specific intelligence on biochemical products, industrial enzymes and other biotechnology-linked imports, allowing stakeholders to assess import reliance and identify opportunities for domestic production.
Strategic Purpose and Policy Relevance
The portal is designed to assist researchers, startups, manufacturers and policymakers in recognising high-value and high-volume imports. By enabling evidence-based decision-making, SUJVIKA supports targeted indigenisation, improved investment prioritisation and strengthened public–private collaboration.
Officials highlighted that biotechnology is emerging as a transformative growth engine, aligned with India’s long-term goal of building a $1 trillion bioeconomy by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat vision.
Expansion of India’s Bioeconomy
India’s bioeconomy has witnessed accelerated growth, rising from approximately USD 10 billion in 2014 to about USD 165.7 billion in 2024 . The biotechnology startup ecosystem expanded from fewer than 100 startups to more than 11,000 ventures , reflecting policy-driven innovation and increased private participation.
India has consolidated its position as a leading global vaccine manufacturer and a major biotechnology research and production hub. The recently approved BioE3 Policy — Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment — emphasises high-performance biomanufacturing and sustainable innovation.
Emerging Research Infrastructure
The Minister outlined advances including the National Biofoundry Network , comprising specialised biofoundries and bio-enabler facilities. A nationwide network of bio-incubators continues to support technology translation and enterprise creation.
