In 2025, India set a new standard in the field of maritime education by opening the first Maritime Simulation Centre. The centre was founded in AMET Knowledge Park, as part of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a result of the partnership between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and worldwide shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk. This state of the art center will revolutionize how Indian cadets are prepared and provided with skills to work at sea.
Modern Training Facility.
The Full Mission Simulators provided in the simulation centre are both Deck and Engine Full Mission Simulators, as well as Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). High-tech AR/VR training labs simulate the maritime environment, enabling the trainees to learn how to navigate, avoid collisions, steering, watchkeeping and engine troubleshooting within a safe setting. These technologies allow practical work to be introduced into the classroom that closes the gap between theory and practice.
Strategic AMET-Maersk Partnership.
The investment of Rs13.5 crore to construct the project as a replica of the A.P. Moller Foundation is representative of the convergence of the academic experience of AMET and the industrial dominance of Maersk. The two institutions have a history of over 25 years of partnership, which has seen them improve the quality of maritime training and mould Indian seafarers, equipping them to take chances across the world.
Training Seafarers to Global Standards.
The aim of the centre is to prepare the cadets with the skills they need in the field before boarding ships. Making a simulation of the complex maritime tasks and emergencies, ensures that the graduates are prepared to meet the global standards of safety and operation. This will not only enhance the workforce contribution of the Indian in the world shipping but will also enhance employability and confidence among young seafarers.
AMET's Legacy and Growth
AMET has become the leading maritime university in India since its inception in 1993, with over 4,000 students enrolled on its courses and an alumni network of over 27,000 professionals spread across the globe. Its partnership with Maersk strengthens its status of the leader in maritime education and research.
Empowering India to build a Maritime Future.
In the case of Maersk, sponsoring the centre is also in line with its vision of sustainability and talent development as it endeavours to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. In the case of India, the facility is a breakthrough in capacity-building in the maritime sector, which generates the top seafarer and enhances the country in world maritime trade and maritime education.
