National Consumer Day and Its Importance
National Consumer Day is observed every year on December 24 across India to emphasise the importance of consumer rights and effective consumer protection . The date commemorates the President’s assent to the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 , which laid the foundation for a structured consumer rights framework in the country. Over time, the observance has evolved into a forum for reviewing reforms, spreading awareness and strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms.
Theme of National Consumer Day 2025
In 2025 , the day is observed with the theme “Efficient and Speedy Disposal through Digital Justice” . The theme reflects India’s growing reliance on technology-driven consumer justice systems to ensure faster, transparent and accessible dispute resolution. It highlights the role of digital platforms in empowering consumers while encouraging institutions to adopt citizen-centric service delivery.
Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and Dispute Resolution
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 , effective from July 2020 , replaced the 1986 legislation to address challenges emerging from e-commerce and digital markets . It guarantees fundamental rights such as the right to be informed, protected, heard and to seek redressal . The Act established a three-tier adjudicatory structure comprising District, State and National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions. In July 2025 , ten states along with the National Commission (NCDRC) achieved disposal rates exceeding 100 percent, indicating improved efficiency.
Digital Platforms and Institutional Support
The e-Jagriti platform , launched on January 1, 2025 , integrates online filing, virtual hearings and real-time case tracking. By mid-November 2025, it enabled the disposal of over 1.31 lakh cases . The upgraded National Consumer Helpline 2.0 , with AI-enabled multilingual support, facilitated refunds worth over ₹27 crore during the year. Institutions like the Central Consumer Protection Authority , BIS , and National Test House , along with Legal Metrology reforms in 2025, continue to strengthen India’s consumer-centric marketplace.
