PM Modi Inaugurates Safran Aircraft Engine Services India in Hyderabad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the Safran Aircraft Engine Services India (SAESI) facility in Hyderabad, marking a transformative moment for the nation’s aviation and aerospace maintenance sector. The establishment of this centre makes India a recognised host country for a global aircraft engine manufacturer’s MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) operations , a first in Indian aviation history. The development is expected to reduce heavy dependence on foreign repair facilities and retain high-value servicing work domestically.
Situated in the GMR Aerospace & Industrial Park-SEZ , the facility covers 45,000 square metres and will primarily handle LEAP aircraft engines , which power popular fleets such as the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX. With an investment commitment of roughly ₹1,300 crore , the project stands among the largest MRO ventures in the country.
Capacity Expansion and Workforce Growth
By 2035, SAESI is projected to ramp up capacity to 300 engines annually , supported by a highly skilled workforce of more than 1,000 engineers and technicians . The facility will house advanced diagnostic and repair technology, offering global-standard turnaround capability for airlines operating in and beyond India.
A Strategic Boost to India’s Aviation Ambition
The government expects the facility to enhance India’s role as a key aviation hub, strengthen supply chains, reduce overseas expenditure and accelerate indigenous ecosystem development. Policy reforms — including the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016, upgraded MRO norms (2021), and revised GST structure (2024) — have played a vital role in enabling such projects.
