JNPA Powers Green Logistics by the First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet in India

Ecofriendly in a Port Logistics.

The introduction of the first set of electric heavy trucks at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), in India, is considered to be a historic moment in sustainable transportation. Majestic relations India initiates its marathon to clean energy and low-carbon logistics, flagged off by Union Minister, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. The Soviet started with 50 electric trucks, with swappable batteries installed, and is projected to grow to 80 by the beginning of 2025.

In the future, JNPA has previously proposed an ambitious plan of electrifying 90 percent of its own internal fleet exceeding 600 vehicles before December 2026. The Indian ports are also making fast strides in clean energy besides the trucks. Some initiatives would be solar and wind power plants, LNG and hydrogen fuel ecosystems, and the electrification of cargo-handling equipment. Combined, the measures are turning ports into environmentally-friendly transport infrastructure that can be used to improve climate resilience.

Recognition and Progress

JNPA already boasts an excellent international reputation making it one of the Top 25 ports according to the Container Port Performance Index compiled by the world Bank. Yet on top of record material containerisation, it has also achieved significant progress in digitalisation, uptake of renewable energy and SEZ development. The electric trucking fleet contributes to its sustainability port practices leadership.

At the opening of JNPA, Minister Sonowal stressed that the electrification of the port will send a very strong message that India is committed towards being a global leader in green logistics. The move was termed as a paradigmatic step towards a more resilient and greener future by JNPA Chairperson Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh.

Through this venture, India not only is decarbonising its port logistics in a bold move, but also sets pace that the whole world in the maritime industry should emulate.
