  • Event: The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu , handed out the My Bharat -National Service Scheme (NSS) in 2022-23 .

2. The history of the National Service Scheme (NSS).

  • Introduction: It was initiated in the year 1969 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi birth.
  • Overall Objective: To enhance the personality and character of the youth in voluntary community service.
  • Motto: Not Me, But You (स्वयं से पहले आप), the focus on selflessness.
    • Form: It works in the unit structure of schools, colleges and universities. Each of the units usually takes a village or slum and takes up:
    • Normal Service: 120 hours of service annually.
    • Special camp: 7 day residential camp on a bi-annual basis.

  • Institution: The institution was inaugurated in 1993-94 by the ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports .
  • Purpose: To honor excellence in the field of social service and community development in accordance with the NSS ethos.

    • Best NSS Volunteer
    • Best NSS Programme Officer
    • Best NSS Unit
    • Best University/Institution

4. The main specifications of the 2022-23 Process and Ceremony.

  • Presidential Recognition: The awards were personally conferred by the president, Murmu, which gives greater emphasis on the national significance of youth-led service.
  • Example Awardee: Sagar Roy, an NSS volunteer of DAV College, Chandigarh, was awarded with a confirmed case of a recipient of the National NSS Award.
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • The volunteers should be 25 years old ( but for the SC/ST candidates 28 years ) on the last date of the concerned financial year.
  • Strict Selection Process: Nominations undergo a multi-tiered process (Institutional → State/UT → National) and are evaluated based on different criteria (impact, innovation, community involvement, and dedication to NSS ideals).
