UIDAI Launches New Aadhaar App for Secure Digital I D Access and Verification

• The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new Aadhaar mobile app designed to make digital identity access simpler, safer, and more privacy-focused. This new platform allows citizens to carry and verify their Aadhaar digitally , reducing dependence on the physical Aadhaar card.

Key Features of the New Aadhaar App

• The app acts as a digital ID wallet , enabling users to show only the required information—such as name and photograph—while hiding sensitive details like address or date of birth. It supports up to five Aadhaar profiles on one device, provided all are linked to the same registered mobile number.
• Verification is made seamless through QR codes , allowing quick and paperless identity checks both online and offline . The app also includes an activity log that records every verification attempt for user transparency.

Privacy and Security Measures

UIDAI has strengthened privacy and control through several new features:

• Face authentication is mandatory during setup, preventing impersonation.

• A six-digit security PIN protects app access and can be changed anytime.

• A biometric lock ensures that fingerprints or facial data cannot be used until the user deliberately unlocks them.

• The app’s selective data sharing feature aligns with data minimisation principles, ensuring only the necessary information is shared during KYC or verification.

Download and Setup Process

The app can be downloaded free from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store . Users must select their preferred language, enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number , and verify via OTP sent to the registered mobile number. After face authentication , they set a security PIN and can add up to five family profiles .

Aadhaar App vs mAadhaar

While the new Aadhaar app focuses on daily digital identity use —such as displaying credentials or scanning QR codes—the existing mAadhaar app remains essential for administrative functions like downloading e-Aadhaar, ordering PVC cards, or generating Virtual IDs.
