Mizoram Biodiversity Boost: Scientists Identify New Non-Venomous Snake Species
Researchers have identified a new species of non-venomous reed snake in Mizoram , highlighting the state’s rich yet underexplored biodiversity. Named Calamaria mizoramensis after its place of discovery, the species adds to India’s growing list of endemic reptiles and underscores the ecological importance of forested hill regions in the Northeast.
Discovery and Scientific Publication
The discovery was led by Prof. H. T. Lalremsanga of Mizoram University , along with researcher Malsawmdawngliana Fanai and collaborators from Russia, Germany and Vietnam. The findings were formally published on January 5, 2026 , in the peer-reviewed journal Zootaxa . Detailed analysis confirmed that the snake belongs to the genus Calamaria , which includes 69 recognised species worldwide .
From Misidentification to New Species
Specimens of the snake were first encountered in 2008 on the Mizoram University campus and later from several other locations in the state. For years, they were misidentified as a widespread Southeast Asian species due to subtle physical differences. However, long-term genetic studies revealed over 15% DNA divergence from its closest relatives—sufficient evidence to classify it as a distinct species.
Habitat, Behaviour and Distribution
Calamaria mizoramensis is nocturnal and semi-fossorial, preferring humid, forested hill environments. It has been recorded at elevations between 670 and 1,295 metres , including areas close to human habitation. While currently confirmed only from Mizoram, researchers suggest it may also occur in neighbouring states such as Manipur, Nagaland and Assam, as well as Bangladesh’s Chittagong region.
Mizoram’s Expanding Herpetofaunal Record
The study also updated Mizoram’s herpetofaunal checklist, documenting 169 species , including 52 amphibians and 117 reptiles . This reinforces Mizoram’s status as a biodiversity hotspot and highlights the need for sustained research and conservation in its fragile hill ecosystems.
