Varanasi Unveils India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Water Taxi, Advancing Green Inland Transport

Varanasi has created national history by launching India’s first hydrogen-powered water taxi service , a major leap toward eco-friendly inland navigation. Inaugurated at Namo Ghat , the initiative showcases the government’s focus on sustainable mobility, clean energy technologies and tourism development along the Ganga.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Water Taxi

Constructed at the Cochin Shipyard , the vessel operates on a hybrid electric–hydrogen propulsion system , enabling zero emissions , low noise and high fuel efficiency. Each boat accommodates around 50 passengers and includes amenities such as bio-toilets , CCTV surveillance and vegetarian refreshments. The service currently runs between Namo Ghat and Ravidas Ghat , with plans to expand operations to Asi Ghat and Markandeya Dham .

Operational Timings and Passenger Capacity

The hydrogen water taxi completes seven to eight round trips daily , operating from morning until evening. Boats depart at intervals of 1.5 to 2 hours , ensuring a steady flow of services for tourists and local travellers. Onboard solar panels further enhance the vessel’s green-energy credentials, reducing reliance on conventional power sources.

Fares, Boarding Points and Booking

The current fare is approximately ₹500 for a one-way journey. Passengers can board from Namo Ghat or Ravidas Ghat . Concessions for seniors, students or Divyangjan have not yet been introduced, though queries can be made at the Namo Ghat ticket counter. Bookings can be made through trusted local operators or via services such as Jalsa Cruise Line through phone or WhatsApp. A dedicated booking system from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is expected as the service expands.
