INS Vikrant Makes First Overseas Deployment at IFR 2025 Colombo

INS Vikrant Leads India at International Fleet Review 2025 in Colombo

India has marked a major milestone in its maritime journey with the deployment of INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri to the International Fleet Review (IFR) 2025 hosted by Sri Lanka from 27–29 November 2025 . The participation is historically noteworthy as it marks the first overseas operational voyage for both vessels , signalling growing naval capability and regional outreach.

Showcase of Indigenous Naval Strength

INS Vikrant—the pride of Indian naval shipbuilding—serves as the centrepiece of India’s IFR contingent. Its appearance in Colombo demonstrates the progress of the indigenous aircraft carrier programme and India’s industrial ability to field complex frontline warships. Representing self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, Vikrant’s participation enhances India’s visibility at one of the world’s premier maritime gatherings.

INS Udaygiri Strengthens India’s Presence

Deployed alongside Vikrant is INS Udaygiri , a modern guided-missile frigate built under the Project-17A class. Its deployment reflects India’s maturing shipbuilding ecosystem, advancements in stealth and combat capability, and a more confident outward-facing naval posture. Together, the two vessels present a balanced, indigenous blue-water combat profile.

Engagements During the Colombo Fleet Review

Over three days, both ships will participate in:
✔ International fleet sail-past and ceremonial review
✔ City parade and joint cultural outreach
✔ Harbour interactions with foreign naval personnel

These activities support diplomatic goodwill, shared training, and maritime understanding among participating navies, enhancing India's naval soft power.
