Indian women’s tennis has witnessed a notable breakthrough with Vaishnavi Adkar becoming the first Indian woman since 2009 to reach the singles final of a W100 tournament. The 21-year-old Pune-born player achieved the milestone at the ITF Women’s Open in Bengaluru, marking a significant step in her professional career.
Landmark Performance at Bengaluru
Competing as a wildcard entrant and ranked World No. 690, Adkar produced an impressive run by defeating several higher-ranked opponents en route to the final. She ultimately finished runner-up after facing Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel.
Despite the result, Adkar secured 65 WTA ranking points along with prize earnings. Her strong showing resulted in a substantial rankings surge, with her live position improving by over 200 places to approximately World No. 466.
She is the first Indian woman to reach a W100 or higher-level singles final since Sania Mirza achieved a similar feat in 2009.

Born on December 14, 2004, Adkar began her tennis journey at the age of seven. She progressed steadily through junior competitions, attaining a notable ITF junior ranking and emerging as India’s top Under-14 player.
