Tamil Nadu Secures Five New GI Tags, Strengthening Cultural and Agricultural Identity
Tamil Nadu has expanded its Geographical Indication (GI) registry with five newly certified products, highlighting the state’s rich craft heritage and diverse agricultural resources. With these additions, Tamil Nadu’s GI portfolio has risen to 74 items , one of the highest in India.
Woraiyur Cotton Sarees Celebrate Ancient Weaving Traditions
The Woraiyur cotton sarees, known for their Chola-era origins, have earned a GI tag for their distinctive weaving style. Characterised by narrow borders, minimalist motifs and the traditional Korvai joinery technique, these sarees reflect centuries-old craftsmanship preserved by the Devanga community. The mineral-rich Cauvery water used in the dyeing process enhances colour brightness and fabric quality, giving the sarees their signature elegance.
Thooyamalli Rice Gains Recognition for Purity and Culinary Value
Thooyamalli, a traditional rice variety named for its jasmine-like purity, has also been granted GI certification. Cultivated primarily in Kancheepuram, the grain is shiny, aromatic and ideal for dishes like biriyani. The crop’s 135–140-day maturity period and high nutrient value make it a preferred choice among consumers and farmers, strengthening the region’s agricultural identity.
Ambasamudram Choppu Samaan Earns Craft Recognition
The colourful wooden toys of Ambasamudram—popularly known as Choppu Samaan —have received GI protection for their unique craftsmanship. Traditionally representing miniature household items, these toys are crafted using safe, eco-friendly materials with smooth lacquer finishes. While earlier made from teak or rosewood, artisans now use sustainable options such as rubberwood and eucalyptus, keeping the craft relevant and environmentally conscious.
