Palamu Tiger Reserve Launches ‘Vanjeevi Didi’ Initiative

Women-Led Conservation Drive Begins in Jharkhand

The Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) has introduced the ‘Vanjeevi Didi’ initiative, a community-based conservation programme designed to enhance women’s participation in forest and wildlife protection. Implemented by PTR’s south division, the initiative reflects a grassroots strategy to strengthen biodiversity conservation through local engagement.

Women as Conservation Catalysts

Under the programme, 18 educated women from each of 17 identified villages have been designated as ‘Vanjeevi Didis’. Many of the selected participants are college graduates or students pursuing higher education, while others possess experience in community-led environmental practices.

These women will function as local conservation ambassadors, promoting awareness about wildlife protection, discouraging deforestation, and advocating sustainable resource use. Authorities emphasise that women’s influence within households can play a crucial role in fostering behavioural change.

Focus on Hinterland Communities

The initiative was launched in the Garu range, encompassing villages situated within PTR’s hinterland. Officials observed that forest-related offences often originate from within nearby communities. By encouraging women to sensitise families and neighbours, the programme seeks to establish social deterrence against activities such as poaching and illegal habitat degradation.

Incentives and Multi-Dimensional Role

Each Vanjeevi Didi will receive a monthly incentive of Rs 3,000. The project is initially structured for a two-month pilot phase, followed by evaluation. A proposal has been forwarded to the state forest department for institutional support.

Beyond conservation, participants will assist in promoting school enrolment, providing basic educational guidance, and spreading information regarding government employment and welfare schemes. The model mirrors community mobilisation frameworks such as self-help groups and para-legal volunteer networks.

Conservation Significance

The initiative illustrates an evolving conservation paradigm that integrates social empowerment with ecological stewardship, reinforcing community ownership of biodiversity protection.
