  • History of Tripura        

 

  • Ancient & Medieval Period:

    • Tripura is the name also associated with the mythical king Tripur a descendant of the Yayati dynasty.
    • The Manikya Dynasty ruled over it centuries. Ratna Manikya was the founder of the dynasty in the 15 th century.
    • Its initial seat of power was at Udaipur (previously Rangamati) and then in the 19th century moved to Agartala.
    • One of the rulers who encouraged art and culture was Maharaja Krishna Manikya (18 th century).

 

  • Modern Period and merger with India:

    • Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya the final ruling king (1923-1947). He formed the Agartala Airport and is referred to as the father of modern Tripura.
    • His wife Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi was a regent after the independence of India.
    • On September 9, 1949, Tripura signed the Tripura Merger Agreement which made it a Part C state.
    • It was turned into a Union Territory November 1, 1956.
    • On January 21, 1972, Tripura got the full statehood.

 

  • Geography of Tripura

    • Location: Northeast India, with Bangladesh bordering it on north, south and west, and Assam and Mizoram to the east.
    • Climate: Hot and wet tropical climate.
  • Major Rivers

    • Gumti: This is the longest river, taking its origin in Dumbur Lake.
    • Manu: is found in the Sakhan Range.
    • Haora: Passes through Agartala.
    • Khowai: A tributary of Haora.
  • Lakes:

    • Dumbur Lake (Rudrasagar Lake): The biggest lake in Tripura with its water lillies and Neermahal Palace.
    • Amar Sagar: Lake and picnic site.
    • Highest Point: Betalongchhip (Jampui Range) some 930 meters.
    • Key Ranges: Jampui, Sakhan, Langtarai and Atharamura ranges.
    • Soil: The soil is mostly Laterite soil.
  • National Parks and Wild life Sanctuaries:

    • Clouded Leopard National Park: This park is found in Sipahijola Wildlife Sanctuary.
    • Rajbari (Bison) National Park: This park is found in the Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary.
    • Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary
    • Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary: It is one of the small ones in the country.
  • Polity and Administration

    • Capital: Agartala
    • Districts: 8 Districts (Dhalai, Gomati, Khowai, North Tripura, Sepahijala, South Tripura, Unakoti, West Tripura).
    • Legislature: Unicam (60 seats + 2 nominated).
    • Lok Sabha Seats: 2
    • Rajya Sabha Seats: 1
    • First chief minister: Sachindra Lal Singh.
    • First Governor: B. K. Nehru

    • Major crop: Rice, Jute, Tea, Sugarcane, Potato, Cotton.
    • Large-scale Industries: Handloom and Handicrafts, Rubber, processing Tea, Agarwood (Eaglewood).
    • Significant Minerals: Natural Gas, Clay, Glass Sand.
    • Popular Handicrafts: Tripura Cane and Bamboo work (GI Tagged), Handloom weaving.
  • Power Projects:

    • Gumti hydro Electric Project: It is the only significant hydroelectric project.
    • Rokhia and Baramura thermal power plants.
    • Palatana Gas-Based Power Project (ONGC-Tripura Power Company): It is one of the biggest power projects in the Northeast.
  • Culture & Heritage

    • Large Tribes: Tripuri (most numerous), Reang, Jamatia, Noatia, Chakma, Halam, Mog, Lushai.
  • Major Festivals:

    • Garia Puja: Principal festival of the Tripuri people.
    • Kharchi Puja: The 7-day long royal festival to worship the Earth.
    • Ker Puja: A festival of the harvest.
    • Ashokastami Mela at Unakoti.
    • Jampui Hills and Orange and Tourism Festival.
    • There are Folk Dances: Garia, Hojagiri (it is distinguished by good balance), Lebang Boomani, Bizu.
    • Musical Instruments: Sumui (flute), Kham (drum), Sarinda, Chongpreng.

    • Sachin Dev Burman: Famous music composer and singer.

  • UNESCO Site:

    • The creation of the Dance Mask of Tripura (Chhau Mask) is a part of the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
  • Important Facts & Firsts

    • First University: Tripura University (1987).
    • First Newspaper: Jagaran (1933).
    • The inaugural Rail Service: Linked to Kumarghat in 1964.
    • GI Tags: Tripura Queen Pineapple, Tripura Cane and Bamboo Work.
    • UNESCO Peace Prize: Mother Teresa (granted in 1975 due to her work in Tripura, in the refugee camps).
