The INSPIRE Award Scheme About the INSPIRE Award Scheme.
The Innovation in Science Pursuit of Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Award is a project of the Government of India Department of Science and Technology. The programme is aimed at students of Classes 6-10 who are expected to present the ideas of originality, practicality, and benefit to the society. The chosen students will be funded Rs10,000 to transform their thoughts into operational models. Such innovations are then assessed at the district, state and national levels with the best of projects being displayed at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Muzaffarpur's Achievement
The high participation of schools and teachers in the district is evident in the number of submissions made in Muzaffarpur which has never been experienced before. District Education Officer, Kumar Arvind Sinha attributed success to involvement on the grassroot level, active teachers motivation and student involvement. Another district, Vaishali, in Bihar also did very well, getting sixth position in the country with 5,805 entries.
Themes of Innovation
Students provided ideas of burning issues like:
- Renewable energy solutions
- Low cost irrigation equipment.
- Mechanisms of pollution control.
- Disability-friendly devices
- Conserving water technologies.
Such thoughts demonstrate a good understanding of the local issues as well as global sustainability, and young innovators demonstrate the fact that they can think outside of the classroom.
Role of Educators
The teachers and school principals have been very much instrumental as they have helped students in the process of submitting their work and development of creativity. Through their mentorship, a culture of innovation has been maintained throughout Muzaffarpur.
Impact and Future Prospects
Muzaffarpur and Vaishali have been successful and this is an indication that Bihar is emerging as a leader in the Indian innovation scene. It is the opinion of experts that with such participation the students will be motivated to take up science and technology that would lead to future development of the rural areas, sustainability of the environment and social welfare.
The INSPIRE Award Scheme is not only encouraging innovation but also, by rewarding young talent at a young age, is ensuring the future of Indian science, engineering and problem solving talent.
