‘Siddha for Global Health’: Ministry of Ayush Highlights Traditional Medicine

The Ministry of Ayush will celebrate the 9th Siddha Day on 3 January 2026 at Kalaivanar Arangam , Chennai, in collaboration with leading national and state Siddha institutions. The event reflects the government’s sustained push to strengthen India’s traditional medical systems and integrate them into public health, research and global wellness frameworks.

Significance of Siddha Day

Siddha Day is observed every year on 6 January to mark the birth anniversary of Sage Agathiyar , revered as the father of the Siddha system of medicine. One of the oldest medical traditions in the world, Siddha originated in Tamil Nadu and emphasises preventive care, holistic healing and balance between body, mind and environment. The annual observance celebrates Siddha’s cultural legacy as well as its continuing relevance in modern healthcare.

Theme and Institutional Collaboration

The 2026 celebration carries the theme “Siddha for Global Health” , signalling efforts to position Siddha medicine within international health and wellness discourse. The programme is jointly organised by the National Institute of Siddha , the Central Council for Research in Siddha , and the Directorate of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy . Siddha practitioners, researchers, academicians and students from several States are expected to participate.

Dignitaries and Academic Engagement

The event will be inaugurated and presided over by the Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan . Union and State ministers, senior officials of the Ministry of Ayush and Tamil Nadu health administrators will attend. Students from Government Siddha Medical Colleges in Chennai and Palayamkottai, along with private Siddha institutions from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, will ensure strong academic representation.
