India–Germany Relations Deepen Ahead of January Summit in New Delhi

India Prepares for High-Level Engagement as German Chancellor Merz Plans January Visit

India is stepping up its diplomatic engagement with Europe as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz prepares to visit New Delhi in January. Coming closely after the Russian President’s arrival and just weeks before the India–EU Summit, the visit underscores New Delhi’s effort to maintain strategic balance among major global partners while expanding its ties with the European Union.

Advancing the India–Germany Partnership Agenda

The upcoming meeting is expected to review ongoing cooperation across trade, technology, innovation, skilled workforce mobility and climate-focused initiatives. Both countries aim to sharpen collaboration on defence, security and resilient supply chains. Their earlier dialogue during the G7 sidelines helped set an expanded roadmap for bilateral engagement, particularly in green technologies and digital transformation.

European Sensitivities and India’s Positioning

Berlin has consistently supported Ukraine and regards European security as intertwined with developments across the Indo-Pacific. Although India and Germany differ in their approach to Russia, German officials have acknowledged that India’s recent conversations with Moscow were primarily economic in nature. The visit is seen as an opportunity to further clarify shared priorities amid a complex geopolitical landscape.

Shared Vision for the Indo-Pacific

Germany views China’s assertive posture as a challenge to regional stability. India and Germany have been aligning their strategic perspectives on maritime cooperation, technology standards and securing supply chains. The January meeting is expected to strengthen joint efforts to uphold a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific.
