India First Private Helicopter Assembly Line Inaugurated in Karnataka

Tata-Airbus H125 Facility Marks New Phase in Aerospace Manufacturing

India has operationalised its first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) with the inauguration of the Airbus H125 facility at Vemagal, Karnataka. The plant, established by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) in partnership with Airbus Helicopters, was jointly inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting expanding Indo-French industrial cooperation.

A Milestone for Private Manufacturing

The Vemagal facility represents a structural shift in India’s aerospace ecosystem. For the first time, an Indian private enterprise will undertake end-to-end helicopter assembly, integration, testing, and lifecycle support within the country. TASL will assemble the civil Airbus H125 helicopter, with provisions for the potential military variant, the H125M.

The first India-assembled H125 helicopter is expected to be delivered in early 2027. The programme also carries export potential, positioning India as a regional manufacturing base for South Asia.

Strategic Role of the H125 Platform

The Airbus H125, part of the Écureuil family, is among the most widely operated light helicopters globally and in South Asia. Known for reliability and high-altitude performance, the platform has accumulated over 40 million flight hours worldwide. It remains the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest’s summit.

The H125M variant supports missions including reconnaissance, surveillance, search and rescue, logistics, and medical evacuation. Civil applications span emergency medical services, disaster response, law enforcement, and regional air connectivity.

Boost to Indo-French Aerospace Cooperation

The project marks the second major Tata-Airbus manufacturing collaboration after the C295 transport aircraft programme. Airbus already sources components and services worth over $1.5 billion annually from India, integrating domestic suppliers into global value chains.
