New Works Highlight Paika Rebellion and Odisha’s Intellectual Legacy
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi unveiled two new books authored by veteran leader Biswabhusan Harichandan at a ceremony in Bhubaneswar. The event recognised Harichandan’s extensive public career while underscoring Odisha’s political heritage and historical consciousness.
Tribute to a Long Public Life
Speaking at the function, the Chief Minister framed the launch as more than a literary milestone, emphasising the author’s enduring contribution to public service. Harichandan played a foundational role in Odisha’s political landscape, serving multiple terms as a legislator and holding cabinet positions. Prior to politics, he practised law at the Odisha High Court. His participation in pro-democracy activism during the Emergency period was highlighted as a defining chapter of his life.
Revisiting Bakshi Jagabandhu
One of the books, “Bakshi Jagabandhu: The Great Commander,” revisits the legacy of Bakshi Jagabandhu , who led the 1817 Paika Rebellion. The work presents the uprising as a precursor to later resistance movements, arguing for its wider recognition in India’s freedom struggle narrative. The Chief Minister noted the rebellion’s importance in early anti-colonial mobilisation.
Essays on Identity and Democracy
The Odia volume “E Mati Katha Kahe” compiles essays addressing history, governance, and cultural identity. Themes include reflections on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose , Atal Bihari Vajpayee , democracy, media, Odia identity, and global peace. The Chief Minister expressed hope for an English translation to expand its readership.
