The International Day of the Girl Child

1. Date & Purpose:

• Celebrated on the 11th of October every year.
• The day will focus on the highlighting of the challenges girls are experiencing, empowerment of these girls and the protection of their human rights.

2. 2025 Theme:

• The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis.
• The theme is on the identification of position and strength of girls in driving change particularly during crisis.

3. Historical Background:

• 1995: The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was also a major milestone that was very strong in claiming the rights of girls and women.
• After this, the United Nations General Assembly officially made the International Day of the Girl Child.
• The annual event started in 2012 to deal with the specific barriers and issues that are prevailing among girls around the world.
