New Delhi: The Government of India will soon bring out its 1st ever set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for blood transfusions of animals in blood bank. This effort is intended to bring uniform critical care to the country's huge livestock and companion animal populations.
Addressing a Critical Gap:
Veterinary blood transfusion is currently uncontrolled and makes use of ad hoc donors which are not screened extensively prior to blood donation. The new rules are intended to eliminate potential risks from donor selection, blood donation and blood transfusion safety.
Key Components of the Plan:
Donor eligibility: Specific minimum donor age, body weight, vaccination status and health requirements are stated for canine, feline and large-animal donors. The frequency of donation is limited to avoid animal abuse.
National Blood Bank Network: A system of a “National Veterinary Blood Bank Network” (N-VBBN) will be created to ensure that blood banks across the country are organized and collaborating with one another.
Digital Connectivity: A digital registry of donors that will keep the inventory of blood in real-time along with helpline for emergency.
Ethical Standards: Donor animals were not paid for blood donations; donations were made voluntarily and with owner consent accordingly.
Significance:
This model would be critical for enhancing emergency animal care, minimizing the sequelae of transfusion and providing encouragement to a sector that plays a major role in the agricultural economy of India.
